The beach resort of Perissa
and the cosmopolitan resort of Kamari are dominated by the Profitis Ilias, at 556 metres the highest peak on the island.
The summit of Profitis Ilias
is home to a monastery of the same name and to a military base. These can be reached by a roadway from Pyrgos.
The two resorts are separated by the mighty rock ’Mesa Vouno’ (or
rock in the middle) that ancient Thira was built on. The ruins of this ancient capital city
of the mythical King Theras of Sparta in 1000BC can still be seen today.

From the roadway behind the church a path leads up Messa Vouno to the chapel of
Agios Giorgios which sits on a ledge high up and overlooking Perissa. From here the path continues upward to the saddleback
area on top that lies between Profitis Ilias and Cape Messa Vouno. Here is situated the remains of Ancient Thira. From here
you can descend the other side down the switchback road to Kamari.

The main street of Perissa is
lined with small shops and taverna’s. At the top end is a large co-op supermarket with adjoining Post Office. Next to
this is ‘Santa-Irini’ the 24-hour bakery and a little further down on the same side is the highly recommended
Taverna Xani.
Further down again on the same side is ‘Dimitris Car Hire’
an independent with very good prices.
Perissa has a seemingly endless
beach from Cape Messa Vouno to the small resort of Perivolos. The beach is mixed but mainly tiny black pebbles. There is no
direct access to Kamari other than the water taxi which runs a regular service between the two resorts.
