Fira is the capital of Santorini
and is built clinging to the top edge of the cliff 900ft above the port. 800 broad zigzagged steps connect the port to the
town. You can either walk the steps or take the traditional ride on a mule or donkey. For the past twenty years there has
however been a third option since the installation of a cable car.
The capital of the island was moved to Fira from Pyrgos in the early
part of the 19th century. There are now around 2000 inhabitants who live in the present but try to maintain the
traditions of the past.
The town roads run parallel with the cliff and small streets link them. Numerous shops offer a wide variety of merchandise
from the cheapest cotton clothes to expensive furs and jewellery.
