Built on a small hill Pyrgos is the highest village on the island. At the top
of the village is the remains of a 13th century Venetian castle. There are 50 churches in Pyrgos and 250 inhabitants.
It is said that Pyrgos has more churches than houses, more donkeys than people and more wine than water. A road runs from
Pyrgos to the summit of Profitis Ilias for access to the Monastery and to the Greek and NATO military base.
