Patra (Patras) is the largest city in the Peloponnese
and the third largest in Greece after Athens and Thessalonike. For many visitors the port at Patra is the gateway to the Peloponnese,
the most important harbour of the Peloponnese connecting Italy and the islands with the road and rail links. The most attractive
part of Patra is the upper town around the slopes of the ancient acropolis where the castle now stands. This is worth the
climb for the views to the north across the gulf of Corinth and south across the mountains of Peloponnese and over the Ionian
sea toward Zakynthos and Kefalonia.
