The Island of Euboia is the second largest island in Greece, after Crete. It's separated
from the mainland only by a narrow Gulf of Euboia and Evripos Strait. It's a huge island, long and narrow, stretching over
the Aegean Sea. The Island's capital is Halkida. The island is easily accessed from the Athens national road. You can choose
from two bridges over the narrow strait. Under the old bridge you can watch the water run in both directions, it's said that
it changes automatically every 4 hours or so. Reason for this phenomenon is unknown; it has remained unsolved through the
ages. Even the great Aristotle was unable to solve it.
The
name Halkida has two origins. It can mean either "Halkos", copper in Greek, or "Halki", a form of shell used in dying red
fabrics. Halkida seaside is very appealing with dozens of restaurants and cafés, and with a walking area right in the waterfront.
