Epirus did not become part of the modern Greek nation until the Balkan wars of 1912-13. It's capital is Ioanina.

The road from Thessaly to Ioanina enters Espirus through the Katara pass; at 1705 metres the highest mountain pass in Greece. The first town you come to is Metsova. During Ottoman times it enjoyed trading priviledges and today is still the only settlement of any size in western Epirus and the Pindos Mountains.
